How to Learn from Text-Heavy Modules and Long Paragraphs

Have you ever felt completely overwhelmed when studying from a really long module or course material? If so, you're not alone. Here are a few practical tips I've been using that might help you out:

1. Define Your Learning Goal

Are you looking to deepen your knowledge in a field you're already familiar with, or are you starting entirely from scratch? Having a clear objective will help you choose the right learning approach.

2. Execution

Just start, don't overthink it. Simply open the module and begin reading. Action beats perfection! To lower the mental burden of opening a massive module, try committing to just the first 5 minutes, or use the Pomodoro technique (25 minutes of focus) to get the ball rolling.

3. The Methods

a. Deepening Existing Knowledge

If you already have a good grasp of the subject, simply read through the material. Your brain will naturally find it easier to absorb the information. You can selectively focus on the parts that are most relevant and crucial for your specific needs. Since re-reading familiar material can sometimes get boring, try skimming or scanning the text to hunt for specific keywords or new insights.

b. Learning from Scratch

This is the tricky part. When you're dealing with new terms, new concepts, and everything feels foreign, here's what consistently works for me:

  • Focus on the structure first Read the titles and subheadings to grasp the big picture before doing a deep dive into the details.
  • Highlight key points Don't highlight everything, only mark the truly crucial information.
  • Understand core definitions Make sure you thoroughly understand the foundational concepts before moving forward.
  • Take breaks If your brain is exhausted, stop and continue tomorrow. There's no need to force it.
  • Create a mind map Visualizing the information in your own unique way can make it much easier to remember.
  • Don't be afraid to revisit If you forget something or don't quite understand a section, don't hesitate to go back and reread the previous material.

Remember: Learning is a process, not a sprint. Be patient with yourself! ๐Ÿ’ช
